New research publication: Investigating the impact of Cultural Game Jams on youth engagement in game design.

A new EPIC research article titled “Jamming with Culture – Piloting Cultural Game Jam with Youth,” co-authored by Eva Eriksson, Kim Holflod, and Rikke Toft Nørgård, has been published in the Proceedings of the 23rd Annual ACM Interaction Design and Children Conference (IDC ’24). The article emphasizes the role of youth in creating games, especially looking at the transition of youth from consumers to creators.

The publication highlights the concept of cultural game jams as dynamic spaces for collaboration, where young participants engage with cultural content to develop interactive games. This process not only fosters creativity but also encourages critical reflections on cultural identity and heritage. In this way, it addresses tangible and intangible issues of cultural heritage.   The findings underscore the significance of collaborative design practices in empowering youth, showing how cultural game jams can serve as platforms for learning, expression, and community building. By focusing on the lived experiences of youth, the research illustrates the transformative potential of cultural engagement within the framework of interaction design.  This article is an important contribution to the discourse on youth participation in cultural practices, complementing ongoing initiatives that aim to merge technology, creativity, and cultural expression.
