D3.1 Protocols for carrying out cultural game jams in local sites

WP3 of the EPIC-WE Project aims to explore and research the potential of games and game-making practices to empower youth and contribute to strengthening European values and cultural participation. At the same time, it aims at producing accesible resources to enable third parties to profit from the knowledge gathered through the game jams, and potentially reproduce the quadruple-helix game-making ecosystem across Europe.

The present deliverable includes four protocols for carrying out cultural game jams in local sites:

  • Protocol 1: Quadruple Helix Cultural Innovation;
  • Protocol 2: Cultural Game Jam Kit;
  • Protocol 3: EPIC-WE Research Protocol for Cultural Game Jams in Local Sites;
  • and Protocol 4: EPIC-WE Practical Protocol for Cultural Game Jams in Local Sites

Main Insights from the Protocols

Protocol 1 introduces and explains the Quadruple Helix Cultural Innovation Ecosystems and EPIC-WE Cultural Hubs. It explores theoretical foundations, potential implications, and practical applications. The quadruple helix ecosystem is based on the collaboration between (1) public authorities and organisations, (2) industry, (3) academia, and (4) citizens. The protocol applies theory to practice and explains the methodological and theoretical foundations of the EPIC-WE Cultural Jams. Click here to read.

Protocol 2 is concerned with the distinct processes of the EPIC-WE Cultural Game Jams, its phases, different methods, and tools. The protocol contains the novel concept of transition tools, which are tools designed to act as mediators between phases and enable meaningful and reflective transitions from one phase to the next. Click here to read.

Protocol 3 explains how to set up Design-Based Research and Innovation interventions, construct and research the ecosystem, construct and research the game jams, detailed event schedule and procedures, and detailed program and roles for actors (including youth citizens). Click here to read.

Protocol 4 presents a practical approach to facilitating Cultural Game Jams. It contains practical requirements and guidelines for preparing and implementing Cultural Game Jams in local sites. The report contains requirements, reflections, and recommendations on: roles and responsibilities, material and production considerations, networks, recruitment of participants, and sustainable development goals. Click here to read.
