2.2. State of the Art in game jams and game-making co-creation practices amongst Cultural Heritage Institutions, Creative Industries, Higher Education Institutions and Youth Citizens: A Comprehensive Report

We are proud to present EPIC-WE’s State of the Art in game jams and game-making co-creation practices amongst Cultural Heritage Institutions, Creative Industries, Higher Education Institutions and Youth Citizens (D2.2), a comprehensive analysis of the latest research and practices in the intersection of gaming, cultural heritage, creative industries, and youth engagement. This report, the result of a systematic literature review, seeks to advance both theoretical and empirical understanding in this critical area.

Scope and Methodology
The updated report builds upon the previous version (D2.1) and incorporates new data across several key sections, including Youth Empowerment, Types of Game Jams, Games from Game Jams, and Positive and Negative Aspects of Game Jams. This analysis includes 68 articles, sourced from scientific databases and external publications, covering a wide range of perspectives on the role of game-making in cultural heritage and creative industries. Using the PRISMA 2020 method, EPIC-WE’s team conducted a rigorous and systematic review, with all data coded through NVivo 14 software.

Implications for Future Practices
This report contributes valuable knowledge to the growing field of game jams, especially regarding how these events can be used to engage youth in meaningful cultural creation. The findings underline the importance of collaboration between Cultural Heritage Institutions (CHI), Creative Industries (CI), and Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in providing the necessary tools, frameworks, and support to harness the full potential of game jams.

As we continue to explore the potential of game jams as a powerful tool for both youth engagement and cultural preservation, this report serves as an essential resource for stakeholders seeking to advance the field. By combining theoretical frameworks with practical insights, EPIC-WE hopes to inspire further research and innovation in game-making and co-creation practices.
